History

Founded by the banks of the Hilaton River, Cadiz was called Valdivieso and it was renamed by the Spanish colonizers after a place in Spain in 1861. It separated from Saravia (present-day E.B. Magalona) in 1878. It became the capital of the Republica de Negros in 1898 until it was dissolved in 1899, and then it was converted into a city pursuant to Republic Act No. 4894 on June 17, 1967.

Its early church was described to be made of hardwood and nipa roof.

Architecture

The church is considered an important architectural gem designed by National Artist Leandro Locsin in 1963, and it follows a basilica-style layout in sacred spaces.

It features dramatic, symmetrical walls made of grooved, maroon surface bounded by white concrete. They curve and flank a central, foregrounded panel made of glass panes forming a cross. Perched above is a system of loudspeakers and a crucifix. The portico is a concrete slab supported by buttresses with the name of the parish in channel letters, and it overlooks the footpath and churchyard.

Celebration

The feast day of Sto. Niño is January 26, coinciding with the town’s celebration of the annual Dinagsa Festival.
