History

The church was established in 1734 with Fr. Bias Urbano as the first parish priest. They then donated the image to the parish. It was around the time that the town was organized and Pedro Jaoud was appointed the first cabeza de barangay.

Additionally, it is the home of Sto. Niño de Agta. Measuring two and a half feet, the image was a gift by Queen Isabela of Spain to Spaniards named Simon Barcelo and Marcilona dela Cruz in 1703.

Following a spate of thefts of religious objects in Western Visayas, the head and arms of the 18th-century Sto. Niño that was made of ivory was stolen on January 30, 2005. It was the second instance of theft of the icon, the first occurred in 1984 when it was sold for four million pesos to the Agencia de Empeños in Iloilo City. It was recovered and returned to the parish community in 1986.

Architecture

The church complex is located at the heart of the town, and a stone’s throw away from Bugasong Central School. The house of worship is of recent construction. A quadrangular bell tower stands before the perimeter gate and is capped by a dome roof.

Celebration

The feast day of Sto. Niño is January 18, and the town celebrates the Bugas sa Lusong Festival. Meanwhile, the feast of St. John of Sahagun is every June 12.
