History

Ubay belonged to Talibon when the latter became a town in 1722. When Dagohoy Revolt broke out in 1744, Ubay became a settlement for those who returned from the revolt in the succeeding decades. It became a town in 1876, although some records suggest that it might have seceded from Talibon as early as 1840.

Its church was administered by the Augustinian Recollects, and it was a visita of Inabanga and then of Talibon in 1831. It became a parish in 1877, but the Recollects left during the Philippine Revolution in 1898.

A colonial-era church was described to be made of wood. It was replaced by another made of concrete, but this was destroyed by Typhoon Ining that struck in 1968. The present-day church was built over the footprint of the earlier church, some parts of which could still be discerned in a number of areas of the structure.

Architecture

A dome rises over the sanctuary, and it is surmounted by a cross. The church’s facade, on the other hand, boasts of a portico with a gable roof with extended ledge, and it is flanked by blind rectilinear windows. A central portion of the pediment is pierced with seven narrow arch windows, that then are extended to blind arches the central one of which contain the image of the Holy Child. The bell tower is erected in the gospel side.

The feast day of Sto. Niño is last Friday of January in a town celebration called Ubay-ubay Festival.
