History
The Aetas settled Bicol region before the coming of the Malays and the Spaniards. They were displaced over time due to encroachment of their lands and they sought the uplands where they built their dwellings. Their descendants can be found in the foothills of Mt. Isarog and are known as Bikol-Isarog Agta.
During colonial period, Pili was a wilderness. Its people were urged by the authorities to live close to the pueblo then known as Nueva Caceres (present-day Naga City), an organization system known as reducciones. Those who remained were known as cimarrones, and they continued to oppose the foreign rule imposed by the Spanish colonialists.
The first town center was located in Binanuaaan, which means “what was once a town”. However, it was transferred to the present site when its church was elevated into a parish in 1819.
Architecture
The church’s facade is of masonry wall embellished with grooved pilasters on plinths, acanthus leaves, rosettes, and moldings. The arch entrance is made of deep-red bricks with a leaflet adorning the capstone and the year 1870. It is flanked with niches of holy figures. The posts of the gospel-side wall culminate in spires. The pediment on the other hand is where the patron is enthroned with a blind rose window containing a cross; it is decorated with dentil and at its height is a cross. In the epistle side, attached to the church is the quadrangular belfry with an onion-dome roof.
Celebration
The feast of St. Raphael the Archangel is October 24 and the town celebrates the Cimarrones Festival.
