History

Cuartero began as wilderness, and it was settled by people who called it Binudhian and then later Mapanag, which experts believed was located in present-day Angub. Afterwards, it was known as Fonda and placed under the municipality of Dumarao.

The church became a parish on November 30, 1872. It was renamed after the Bishop Mariano Cuartero of then Diocese of Jaro, who also led and presided the inauguration of the church in 1890.

Cuartero seceded from Dao on the basis of Executive Order No. 159 issued by President Manuel L. Quezon on August 23, 1938, with formal inauguration occurring on the New Year’s Day of the following year.

Architecture

The facade has a prominent portico with a red, half-pyramid roof. Its church tower is built in the middle of the facade and pierced with arches, its second level is where the patron is enshrined and above is the belfry. The church overlooks the town plaza.

Celebration

The feast day of St. Anthony of Padua is June 13.
