History
Christianity was introduced to the town of Badian when Spanish colonizers arrived during the three hundred years-long conquest. Augustinian friars established its church as part of the parish of Carcar in 1599. It seceded from Carcar and became part of the parish of Barili when the latter was elevated into a parish in 1614.
Badian Church separated from Barili and was established as a parish on August 26, 1825. It is the matriz of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church in Matutinao.
Architecture
Badian Church has resemblance of many colonial-era churches, yet there is little detail on the history of its construction. It is distinctive for a pair of massive pillars by its entrance, by which people can gain access to a recessed portico and into the main archway.
Old images of the church reveal that right above the portico and on the rooftop was a squat belfry. However, it was removed to free up the load from the supporting columns. The tolling bells are presently housed in a steeple, a three-level structure with open arches and red roof, built in the gospel side of the church.
The pediment contains a relief of a symbol of the patron, rises to an acroterium topped with a cross in its apex, and in the corners are pinnacles of the pillars. Its cornices are tapered and delineated.
Flanking the portico are square windows with openwork and finial on the roof. The upper register forms a half-gable that rises up to the capital of the pilaster of the entrance.
Celebration
Festivities for its patron, the apostle St. James the Elder, is celebrated every July 25 in the annual Banig Festival. The parish community also celebrates the Sinulog de Badian every January in honor of the feast day of Sto. Niño.
