History

Archdiocesan Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was established by Filipino-Chinese community in Cebu during the term of Julio Cardinal Rosales, D.D., in 1952. Bishop Jose Palma declared it an archdiocesan shrine on May 10, 2012.

Previously it was under the patronage of Our Lady Queen of China, thus it was called Our Lady of China Parish. Afterwards it was changed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its administration is under the Society of Jesus, a religious order that historically had missions towards the Chinese community in Cebu.

Construction of the church was completed during the time of Fr. Arthur Baur, SJ in 1963. Within the parish property is a columbary that was finished in 2016.

Architecture

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Cebu is sculpted in the shape of massive curvilinear shells including the bell tower that stands in its gospel flank. The facade is one such fine example, its great contiguous nave wall curves from one end of the ground and up to a vertiginous apex and back: unmissable and visually striking, tracing the trajectory of a parabolic flight.

A space is created as the facade is recessed. A portico is made by a transverse concrete overhang above a two-rung staircase. Its entrance door is rectangular, above and the sections flanking the entrance are decorated by stained glass and cross motif. A pilaster rises to a similar parabolic path by the entrance, from the ground and abutting from the portico’s roof unto the pediment and back. In the upper register of the facade is a statue of the patron with arms outstretched. About the patron are multicolored glass panels intricately cut and arranged.

Celebration

The feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus is held every June 22nd.
