History

The mother parish of San Narciso Church was Mandaue Church. Consolacion used to be a village of Mandaue called Kampi-ig. Managed by the Augustinian Recollects, it became a parish on February 21, 1871.

In the same year the town became independent, however it was annexed back to Mandaue sometime in 1902.

The land the church stands on was donated by an official of Mandaue by the name of Felipe Hatamosa. He would would eventually become the first mayor when Consolacion regained its autonomy on February 14, 1920 during the Commonwealth period.

Architecture

Much of the church is contemporary owing from renovations done over the years and incorporating neoclassical characteristics. A staircase leads up to the portico with vaulted arch ceiling containing the statue of the patron. The portico has four Corinthian columns in the front that bear a decorated lintel; the inner two form the support of the ceiling while the outermost piers terminate each in a pinnacle that is an angel sculpture holding a globe aloft. Another staircase made of two rungs leads up to the open-air atrium of Corinthian columns. On the roof of the atrium is an arch and statues of winged angels.

The church’s entrance is an arcade of open arches flanked by pilasters. The outermost openings are rectilinear doors. The pediment by the entrance juts above the atrium flanked by statues. Behind the pediment is a quadrilateral belfry of red pyramidal roof with balustrade where each edge stands a winged figure.

Celebration

The feast of San Narciso is held every October 29, coinciding with the town’s yearly Sarok Festival.
