History
San Francisco de Asis Church used to be part of the parish church in Barili. It became a parish on March 28, 1854.
The present-day church’s construction began in 1854 and completed in 1864 within the term of Bishop Romualdo Jimeno. Its builders were Filipino secular priests Rev. Fr. Matias Cabrera and Fr. Doroteo Godinez.
It underwent renovation works in 1980. It was damaged during an earthquake that occurred on October 15, 2013 and restored three years later.
Heritage
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines installed a Level II historical marker on June 6, 2016.
Architecture
The church’s facade is asymmetrical with the belfry built in the gospel flank, pediment, and a roof in the epistle side. Its sides bend to the back, which approximates an overall oval shape. Its central section is a few inches raised from the rest of the stone wall, featuring an arch entrance door flanked in each side by massive twin fluted pilasters.
Above the entrance is a festoon relief and a rectangular window with ornate cartouche. On both recessed sides flanking the central section are pilasters similarly decorated, hemming in a wall surface that features in total from top to bottom two niches of holy figures, four reliefs, and two blind rectilinear windows the epistle side of which is where the heritage marker is installed.
The entablature is wide and plain, cornices are defined and unadorned. The central section rises to a pediment that has a rose window in the middle. The main pediment that towers over is bounded by finials on either sides. Its outline is also quite unique: two inclined planes that give way to a semi-circular middle section that contains relief motifs. In its center in low relief is an elaborate arched niche ornately framed and flanked on each side with twin engaged columns.
The bell tower is in the gospel side. It is dodecagonal with pilasters marking each edge. Its base is part of the church’s stone wall and made of two levels, each of which with arch openings. The belfry is also two-level with each level subsequently less wider. The first level has pilasters while the upper register has engaged columns capped with a dome surrounded by balustrade.
Celebration
The feast of its patron St. Francis of Asisi is celebrated every October 4th in a celebration that is called Sinanggiyaw Festival.
