History
The island of Homonhon is where the first recorded contact between European colonizers and the natives took place on March 17, 1521. It is theorized that the first Catholic mass was held there considering that they remained in the island more than a week including Palm Sunday. On March 28, they sailed westward to Limasawa Island.
The church was established on April 24, 1979 and its patron is St. John the Baptist.
The old church was taken down to give way to a construction of a much bigger church. The demolition took place in September 2018 and church-building lasted two years. With a budget of P7 million pesos funded by Manila-based donors Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Allana and the parish community, the new church with an area of 504 square meters was dedicated on September 25, 2020.
Architecture
The entrance is framed by two massive tapering, slanting posts that terminate in the pediment, decorative floating concrete blocks, and a cross. The primary entryway is shaded by a gable overhang and above is an arch glass window featuring the patron. The rest of the facade consists of side rectilinear windows.
Celebration
The feast day of St. John the Baptist is June 24.
