History

The origin of the town was a settlement along the Lanang River established by people who moved from Borongan. Hence, it was called Lanang after the river and its people were known as Lananganons. More people migrated from Guiuan and inhabited the banks of Tongkip River and then later moved at water source of Bodyongan.

During the Spanish times, it was organized into a town called El Pueblo de Lanang in 1783. Its population was 3,846 people who were converted into Christianity and whose spiritual needs were taken care of by priests from Parish of Borongan. Its church became an independent parish through an approval by Governor General Antonio de Urbiztondo on May 14, 1851.

The town was renamed Llorente after Cebu’s first governor, Julio Llorente, under American colonial government according to Act No. 960 passed on October 23, 1903.

Architecture

The church is decorated by molding and fluted pilasters, and it is hemmed by pillars that culminate in finials at their peaks. It is pierced with arch openings, such as the main doorway that is also shaded by a gable overhang. On the pediment is the image of the patron carrying the Holy Child and topped with a cross.

Interestingly, the church is flanked by two bell towers of dissimilar design. The tower in the gospel side is modern and minimalist, a structure of three posts. On the other side is a traditional four-cornered, four-level church tower that is capped with a dome roof.

Celebration

The feast day of St. Anthony of Padua is June 13.
