History

Natives who opposed foreign rule imposed by Spanish colonizers fled to remote areas in Panay island. One of those areas were Maldespina (present-day cemetery of Bingawan) and the upland settlement of Kinalyan. Later, these places also became a refuge for people who escaped from the atrocities committed by the incoming American colonialists.

In 1901, settlers of Maldespina and Kinalyan led by Gregorio Plaga moved to a southern plateau and organized Bingawan, a name taken from a local spring. It began as a village of the municipality of Calinog and on June 21, 1969, it seceded from Calinog and became an independent town pursuant to the passage of Republic Act No 5511.

A large number of the townsfolk were believers of the Protestantism. The Catholic church was placed under the patronage of the Conversion of St. Paul and it became a parish on March 8, 1971 with Fr. Eleuterio R. Carton as the first parish priest. A property donated by Victor Plagata and Jesus Demorito was the site of the first church.

Architecture

The church’s facade is a blank, white wall embellished by pilasters with finials at their peaks and deep-brown moldings. An overhang overlooks at the entrance and the churchyard. A statue of St. Paul straddling a horse in a depiction of the moment of his divine vision is found in the garden across the facade.

Celebration

The feast day of St. Paul is January 25.
