History

The church was a visita of La Carlota and of Bago beginning in 1880. It was situated in the present-day Zaragoza in Barangay Jorge Araneta.

It was moved to the present location and established by Augustinian Recollects in 1895 with Fr. Florentino Saenz, OAR, as the first priest assigned to Ma-ao between October 1894 and June 1895.

He was succeeded by Fr. Gregorio Albo, OAR (1895), Fr. Antonio Hernandez, OAR (1896 to 1898), Fr. Benito Condon, OAR (1898), and Fr Tomas Goya, OAR (1898 – 1899).

The Philippine Revolution sparked the end of the time of the Recollect friars in Ma-ao. A paucity of records is noted in the succeeding years and well into the beginning of the 20th century.

A small house of worship was erected on a property donated by Christina de Luzuriaga.

The church, assigned under the care of the diocesan clergy, was re-established in 1938 and administered by the parish priest of La Carlota City.

The present-day church was built on a lot donated by Felix Yulo along Malunes Street. It became a parish on March 4, 1968.
