History
The church in Calatrava was placed under the advocation of Sts. Peter and Paul, and it began as a visita of Escalante. Administered by the Augustinian Recollects, it became an independent parish in 1870. An early church of rubblework was built during the time for Fr. Angel Maestro.
The Recollects left during the Philippine Revolution, and the church was under the Aglipayans until 1910. It is not known when the change of patron occurred. The fact is that the church is currently under the patronage of St. Peter.
Another church was built by Fr. Manuel Gomara pre-1930, and the present-day stone church was constructed during the time of Fr. Facundo Valgañon who served between 1938 and 1964.
Architecture
One accesses the interiors through an arcade-portico of fluted columns that extend into pilasters. It is flanked by walls punctured with arch apertures.
The upper sweep of its front wall is a rather busy complex of arches, pilasters, glass, blind arch and pointed arches, molding, and blind gables. At the center is a rose window with the image of the patron. The belfry is found at the topmost part of the facade, and it is pierced with arch opening and surmounted by spires and a cross.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Peter is June 29 in an annual celebration called Hudyaw Festival.
