History
The old name of the town was, and it remains to be known as, Simara. It comes from the word sima, a word that means hook, which the island’s shape is likened to. It was renamed after Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera, the Governor General of the Philippine colony between 1635 and 1644.
The Spaniards established and renamed the island to San Jose in 1574, and it was administered by the secular clergy along with the rest of Romblon. Because of constant Moro raids and the difficulties confronting the Christian mission, Bishop Pedro Arce, OSA, of Diocese of Cebu handed it over to the Augustinian Recollects who arrived in 1635.
A church was established in 1726. A watchtower was constructed to serve as an early warning signal and to protect the people from pirate attacks.
Interestingly, the church’s social media page stated that its founding year is 1885.
The parish is also known for Tiga Cross, reportedly a cross that was planted by the Recollects when the church was being constructed in the 17th century.
Architecture
The church is made of concrete, and arches pierced the simple facade through the doorway and windows. The name of the parish is spelled out by the overhang by the entrance. Its four-level bell tower in the epistle side culminates in crenelated wall and a cross.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Joseph is May 1.
