History
The town of Odiongan is nestled in the midwestern Tablas Island. Its name comes from odiong, a word for arrow, and for a time it was called Inodiongan (one that is pierced by an arrow) and later evolved into Odiongan.
Its pre-historic origin began when it was settled by the aborigines like Negritoes from Iloilo and Mangyans from Mindoro, and Onhans and Nayons from Panay.
The church in Odiongan was one of the earliest to be built in Romblon. The Bishop of Cebu handed over Romblon from the diocesan clergy to the Augustinian Recollects in 1635, and the Recollect friars erected a church two years later. In 1810, people from Banton moved for its fertile lands and where they built a fortress to defend against Moro pirates.
In 1855, it was formally organized into a pueblo.
The church was established in 1847.
In 1888, the colonial-era place of worship was caught in a conflagration that engulfed the town. The tolling of the bells warned the people to flee from their burning homes, saving their lives.
The bell from the Spanish period was preserved in the courthouse, rediscovered by Fr. Antonio Villar, and given back to the custody of the Catholic Church in 1970.
The present-day, modern-built church was improved in April 15, 1985. It was blessed by Bishop Nicolas Mondejar of the Diocese of Romblon on April 5, 1988.
Architecture
The present-day church does not resemble any edifices built from the Spanish period. Perhaps little of the original church remained up to the present time, if none at all.
Its facade is made of overlapping slabs, culminating in a pediment that contains a pierced wall. The entrance is protected by the portico, itself supported by pillars, and on its roof is a the niche of the patron enclosed within an arch.
The bell tower is erected a few meters from the church in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Vincent Ferrer is April 5, and the town celebrates the Kanidugan Festival.
