History

The old name of San Agustin was Guintigui-an, and it was named after a fish called tigue. Its first settlers were the aboriginal groups of Negritoes and Mangyans coming from the nearby islands of Panay, Mindoro, Romblon.

The early settlement was in Cabolutan, becoming a seat of colonial authority for the entire Tablas Island. Moreover, a church was built as a visita. It was attacked several times by Moro raiders, but its people suffered greatly during a chickenpox epidemic in the 18th century that it was abandoned and annexed back to Romblon.

The pueblo was transferred to the present site in Guintigui-an in 1855. In 1868, it was renamed to Badajoz, the hometown in Spain of Spanish Officer Jose Terran. The church was established in 1871 and the colonial-era fort in Cagbo-aya was constructed in 1873.

The town was renamed to San Agustin by virtue of Republic Act No. 1660 that was approved on June 20, 1957.

Architecture

The church is modern, cruciform construction typified by a facade that is largely unadorned, with pockets of raised gardens, and accessible through staircases. On the portico, supported by columns, is the name of the parish. The facade is bounded by concrete trim, and the pediment is a recessed section with rectilinear columns. The belfry is located in the gospel transept.

Celebration

The feast day of St. Augustine is August 28, while of Sto. Niño is every January.
