History

The original residencia of the Jesuit missionaries in Tinago (now barrio Dapdap of Tarangnan) was a mere one hour away from Umauas, the old name of Villareal. The settlement in Umauas comes from the river of the same name. In 1768, it was raised into a pueblo along with Calbiga. Four years later however, Calbiga became the seat of the government of the pueblo and Umauas was reverted as one of its territories.

The settlement suffered from rampant attacks by the Moro pirates. The Moros utilized San Juanico Strait from which they launched devastating assaults against coastal communities.

On March 12, 1863, Umauas became a pueblo and renamed Villareal. The church became a parish three years later.

Architecture

An elegant portico stands before the arch portal of the church. Supported by fluted columns, it also serves as a balcony and decorated with open work. Above the main entryway is the niche of the patroness. The facade is punctured with arches as seen through the side entrances and windows. Its front wall is embellished with stylized dentil, molding, and crenelation. Above the pediment is a dome and a cross.

Celebration

The feast of St. Rose of Lima is August 30.
