History

Larena was previously called by its ancient name, Canoan, and in 1906 it was renamed after Demeterio Larena, the head of civil government in Negros Oriental. The mother parish of San Vicente Ferrer Church was the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Siquijor. It gained parochial status on June 14, 1836, and the church’s bells were blessed in 1881. The parish was administered by Augustinian Recollects until the Philippine Revolution broke out in 1898.

Architecture

Larena Church is contemporary and made of concrete. A portico consisting of four columns supporting a gable welcomes the faithful, and the entrance is a rectangular doorway with metalwork. Flanking it are arch windows of stained glass and columns, a pair on each side, that are holding up a platform above. All of the columns are pitched on quadrilateral bases.

The uppermost level is the pediment that consists of a broken gable with a central section rising above the sloping planes. In it is the arched niche of the patron and flanking it on the pediment are curvilinear decorative bands in the shape of quarter-circles. The church’s facade is bounded by pilasters with pyramidal pinnacles. Its nave is extended on both sides, so the rest of the facade are plain wall surfaces and eaves ornamented with columns.

Celebration

The feast of St. Vincent Ferrer is held every May 3th in a celebration called Canoan Festival.
