History

Augustinian friars established the area as a mission station in 1604. In 1614, Sta. Ana Church became a parish with diocesan priests running its affairs.

The town itself however was founded much later, in 1642.

For years, it was the only parish in Cebu’s southwestern coast and its jurisdiction spanned from Pinamungajan to Samboan, making it the biggest in the south.

Historians in the 18th century wrote that it was one of the three secular parishes in Cebu, the other two being Parian (which was torn down in the 19th century) and Bantayan. It became an archdiocesan shrine on July 24, 2005.

Earlier churches were made of light materials that were vulnerable to fire. A stone church was erected by the river but whenever the river swelled, water would leak into the church. It eventually was destroyed by natural disasters.

Fr. Juan Alcoseba, the parish priest who served until 1910, started the construction of the present-day church in February 1889 in its current site, a property donated by Don Carlos Alquizola.

Heritage

A marker is installed in the gospel side that provide a historical account of the church.

Architecture

Much of the church today is a result of renovations in recent decades, including the addition of the bell tower in the 1950s. Still, the original foundations and walls have been retained. The facade is a mix of soft pastel and accent colors of russet and white. It has four rectangular pilasters that divide the facade into three sections. In the ground level, the main entrance door dominates the view with a wide archway. Flanking it are niches (of blind arches) of patrons.

The niche of St. Anne is located above the door, flanked by rose windows. The apex of the pediment is a cross. The bell tower is erected in the gospel side.

Celebration

The patron of Barili Church is St. Anne, the mother of Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast day of St. Anne is held every July 24th yearly in a communal celebration called Kaumahan Festival.

Services

Mass at the Cemetery is held every 4:00 in the afternoon every first and fourth Mondays of the month.

The parish office is open every day of the week from 8:30 to 11:30 in the morning and from 1:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon.
