History

In the past, the settlement was called Bayog which was either a male babaylan or taken from a name of a tree.

It was renamed to Pambujan, which came from the bubo that referred to a traditional contraption made of bamboo used to catch crabs. Thus for a time it was called Pambubuhan, that is a place where such traps were laid, and the river was also called by the same name.

As the Jesuits began to spread Catholicism in Samar beginning in the 16th century, the people in Pambujan initially resisted foreign influence. Early historical records of the Jesuits indicated that it was placed as a visita of Palapag in 1612, with 340 tributes. By 1649, at the height of Sumoroy revolt, the church was burned.

Its people also suffered from constant, devastating raids by the Moro pirates throughout colonial history. The pueblo was moved to Binongtoan (that is, what was once a town) that is now called Barangay Genulgan. In 1784, the authorities convinced people to move back to the original pueblo.

In 1768, its church became a visita of Laoang. The church became a parish on March 13, 1868, while the town was established earlier on August 4, 1863. The first parish priest was Fray Francisco Crespo, OFM, who began his stint in 1872. He also led the building of the stone church while its metal roof was installed by Fray Ulpiano Tenedero, OFM in 1898.

On October 2008, the provincial government declared the church as a historical landmark.

The town was later divided and gave birth to the towns of San Roque and Silvino Lobos.

Architecture

The church retains much of the Spanish-period masonry, although in some places it has been reinforced or finished with cement. This is quite evident by the arch entrance and the huge pediment. Its front wall is sparsely ornamented. The pediment houses the image of the patron, which is flanked by arch apertures.

The bell tower is located in the rear by the apse.

Celebration

The feast day of St. John the Baptist is June 25.

The parish office is open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
