History

During Spanish colonization, the church in Daanbantayan was a visita of the parish in Bantayan. It was made into a parish and seceded from Bantayan on August 10, 1858 by virtue of the Superior Approval on April 25, 1855.

Construction of Sta. Rosa de Lima Church was made possible in 1886 through a grant from Spanish monarchy and by forced labor of townsfolk during the term of Fr. Feliciano Torres whose name can still be found above the entrance door.

The church was damaged at the height of Typhoon Haiyan that struck the island of Cebu in November 2013 and again by Typhoon Ursula in 2019.

Architecture

Daanbantayan Church is singular in its design where the facade is divided into three sections, a central one flanked on either side by stone walls that are recessed slightly into the background. Its puerta mayor is a wide arch door flanked by twin pilasters whose capitals are decorated with a red rosette. On either walls flanking the puerta mayor are rectangular entrance doors. Between the plain cornices that mark the boundary between the ground and upper registers are ornate scroll works in yellow and two pairs of bigger, similar rosette reliefs. They flank a signage that spells out a brief description about the history of the construction of the church.

In the upper level is a high relief of a festoon, a rose window, and flanking twin engaged Corinthian columns. On both bending sides are niches of holy saints, St. Peter in the gospel side and St. Isidore in the other. The entablature is wide in the central section and inclines downward and recessed, with the left epistle ending in a finial. The pediment is plain except for the foliated relief at its apex and a relief of the symbol of the patron at its center.

The bell tower is erected in the gospel flank of and connected to the church. It is hexagonal in shape and made up of three levels. The second level has arch windows, and the belfry consists of a horizontal section bearing rhomboid decor openings and arch windows with balustrade. It terminates in a quadrangular spire.

Celebration

The feast of its patron, Sta. Rosa de Lima, is held every August 30 in a yearly celebration called Haladaya Festival.
