History
Natives first settled in the coastal community in Agfa, but because it was vulnerable to seaborne attacks by the Moro raiders they transferred to Nagub-an. During the American period, Makato and Tangalan were combined to form the municipality of Taft by virtue of Act No. 720 on April 4, 1903. Tangalan was an arrabal of Makato until it was made into an independent town through Republic Act no. 285 on June 16, 1948.
Construction of the stone church through forced labor began in 1861 and completed in 1889.
Architecture
The colonial-era church is made of coral stones quarried from the sea near Barangay Agfa. Pilasters adorn and divide its front wall, which is pierced with round hollows and its entrance is through an arch doorway, above which is a cartouche containing an inscription, “1889.”
The pediment is separated from the main front wall by a dentil and cornice. Its pediment is elaborately embellished by rosettes, blind arches, blind rose windows, dentil, bas relief of fleur-de-lis, and pilasters. It also contains a niche where the image of Christ the King is installed, above which are a lunette decorated by cherubs, an inscription “Cristo Rey” (Christ the King) flanked by flying angels, and a crown. Its bell tower, located in the gospel side, is capped with a dome, a lantern, and a cross.
Celebration
The feast day of St. John Nepomucene is May 16.
