History
Aniniy-y was populated by migrants from Hamtic in 1630, later followed by people coming from Alimodian and Cuyo. Augustinian friars also established a place of worship near the present-day location of the church around the same time. It was annexed to Dao (present-day Tobias Fornier) in 1840. Casay, San Francisco and Sta. Magdalena was placed under the administration of Anini-y in 1848.
During the American occupation, it was once again a barrio of Dao. It became an independent town through Executive Order No. 205 signed by President Elpidio Quirino on March 4, 1949.
The colonial-era church was built in 1845 and the convent by Fr. Jeronimo V. Aquerin in 1879. The Aglipayans occupied the church in 1902, but it was returned to the Roman Catholic authorities and placed under the pastoral care of the Mill Hill Fathers six years later. Afterwards, it was turned over to the diocesan clergy.
It suffered and withstood the damages World War II, earthquake in 1948, and typhoon in 1973.
Heritage
The National Historical Institute declared Anini-y Church as a heritage church and installed a Level II historical marker on August 5, 2004.
Architecture
Made of cut stones quarried from coral gardens, the church’s facade is divided by a molding with a row of bas relief of rosettes and bounded by pillars that end in finials at their peaks. It is embellished with pilasters with composite capitals.
Its main arch door is flanked by similar shorter pilasters and two strings of decorative rosettes, and above is a cartouche and a bas relief of the Augustinian emblem. It is flanked by walls containing a round hollow and niches of holy figures.
The pediment contains blind rose windows, a richly decorated alcove, and at its peak a cross. In the gospel side is the bell tower with a quadrangular base giving way to an octagonal belfry and capped with a dome roof and a cross.
Celebration
The feast of St. John Nepomucene is May 16.
