History

Caibiran comes from ibid, a local word that refers to a lizard. It is the second town created in the province of Biliran when it separated from the town of Biliran in 1828. The pueblo was relocated in 1882 because the original location was exposed to river flood.

The church is dedicated to the patronage of St. John the Apostle, and it was made into a parish in 1917.

Architecture

The courtyard is paved and at the center is a six-pillar ring with six angels enclosing a fountain and the statue of the patron mounting a horse. It was blessed and inaugurated during the fiesta season in 2008.

The ornately decorated facade was improved and unveiled in 2011 at a cost of over a million pesos. The entrance has a portico supported with decorative columns designed with a lunette and gable, its lintel containing a tableau of the Last Supper. Its side walls rise up to the pediment through a series of steps, each with images of holy figures that included the four evangelists.

Above the entrance is a lovely rose window with intricate tracery enclosed by a blind arch, and on the pediment is an image of a winged creature representing the Holy Spirit and topped with an angel blowing a trumpet.

Flanking the entrance, its wall is divided into three horizontal sections containing interlocking arcades, a row of engaged columns, and holy images. In between them the moldings are decorated by scrollwork and rosettes.

The bell tower is in the epistle side.

Celebration

The feast day of St. James the Apostle is July 25.
