History
The first settlement in the town was in hillock called Subingsubing. Its elevated location provided better warning position against attacks by Moro raiders. Then the settlement was later named Telegrafo and finally Kawayan after the bamboo groves that grew wildly in its lands.
In the past, it was part of Almeria. It was declared a municipality in 1899 during a visit by General Ambrocio Mojica from his trip to Leyte to assume the governorship. It was renamed into San Clemente in honor of his only son.
At the height of religious dispute between Catholics and Aglipayans, Kawayan annexed Almeria from 1905 until 1948.
The church was established in 1955.
