History

The town was formerly called Can-ogong and it was organized in 1921. It was renamed after Aniceto Clarin, the first civil governor of Bohol.

The church that was built in the town was a visita of Inabanga in 1852and then of Tubigon in 1881. It became a parish in 1924. The Augustinian Recollects were its administrators between 1927 and 1937, after which it was handed over the diocesan clergy.

The church built in 1929 was improved in 1991. However, it was destroyed during a 7.2 magnitudes earthquake that occurred on October 15, 2013. As a result, parishioners attended religious services in a temporary church near the rubble.

The earlier church was completely demolished and a plan for a construction of a new church was put in place. The parish took a fundraising initiative called “Simbahan Ko, Tukuron Ko.” Three million pesos worth of donation from the community kick-started the reconstruction in 2014.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops donated 57 million pesos towards the project, which had a total cost of 65 million pesos. The Diocese of Tagbilaran also tapped the aid of Bahay ng Diyos Foundation, Inc. that collaborated with various organizations, expert groups, and religious communities.

The foundation also provided helped in reconstruction efforts of the Diocesan Shrine of St. Vincent Ferrer in Maribojoc which also suffered damages from the same earthquake.

Architecture

The church features a porte-cochere through which the driveway passes and spills out to the courtyard. The portico and entrance contain arches, while the facade and the bell towers have rectilinear fenestration. The pediment features two rows of decorative motif and rose openings. The bell tower, erected in the epistle side, contains a pyramidal roof surmounted by a lantern and a cross.
