History
Jesuit friars founded the church in 1697. They built a rectory to which they moved after they transferred from the town of Loboc in 1753. Upon the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768, it was placed under the administration of the Augustinian Recollects.
It is uncertain when the parish was established, its parochial records date back to 1697. However, another account stated that it became a parish in 1720.
Earlier churches erected by the Jesuits were made of light materials. The Recollect friars started building the colonial-period structures such as the stone church, the fifth one, that was constructed within the term of Fr. Julio Saldaña between 1863 and 1879. It was completed in the first quarter of the 20th century with its ceiling painted by artists Raymundo Francia and Canuto Avila sometime 1919 to 1923 during the tenure of Fr. Natalio del Mar. It was consecrated on August 23, 1923.
On August 15, 2004, Daius Church was declared a shrine of its patroness, Our Lady of Assumption.
The church was damaged during the earthquake on October 15, 2013. Its restoration was carried out by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in 2005 that took two years and it was opened to the public on August 15, 2017 during the patronal feast day.
Heritage
The church complex of Dauis was declared a National Historical Landmark by NHCP through Resolution No. 3 passed in 2009. A marker was installed on May 16, 2009. The complex is composed of the church, watchtower, bell tower, and rectory, all of which are made of quarried cut coral stones.
Later, the National Museum of the Philippines declared that Dauis Church a National Cultural Treasure two years later on August 29, 2011.
Architecture
Our Lady of Assumption Shrine is cruciform and described as a fusion of the Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical. The bell tower, erected by the Recollects in 1774, stands in the epistle flank and is recessed with respect to the portico. Octagonal in its floor plan, it is typical of gothic architecture with pointed arches, finials, and ornaments along the battens of its dome roof that rises to a sharp end.
Its facade is embellished with scroll works consisting of long, sinuous vines and foliage on friezes and on its pediment. Its portico is an arcade of three arches and which features a row of triglyph and decorated metope along a molding band. In its second level are Ionic columns.
Meanwhile, its interior boasts of painted ceiling that is a combination of decorative and catechetical images. Above the crossing is an octagonal drum and pyramidal roof.
