History

Guindulman used to belong to the town of Jagna in the olden times. On On May 5, 1797, it seceded and was organized into a town. It became a settlement of rebels returning from Dagohoy revolt.

The Jesuits were the first missionaries to preach to the natives and when they were expelled in 1768, the Augustinian Recollects took over. It was during their time that the church became a parish in 1788, several years before the town was established. The Recollects left in 1898, returned in during the early years of the American period, and remained as the administrators of the parish until it was handed over to the secular clergy in 1937.

An early church was built within the term of Fr. Antonio Fernandez, OAR between 1798 and 1807. It did not survive, however, from an attack initiated within the Dagohoy revolt in 1827.

Another edifice was constructed in the 19th century probably during the time of Fr. Narciso Hernandez, one of the two priests responsible in the organization of the town of Garcia-Hernandez. It had since reduced into a rubble, possibly abandoned when it was damaged by an earthquake, and exists today as ruins.

Fr. Lorenzo Hernandez, OAR erected the present-day church in 1881. However, it was only in 1950 that it was completed.

Guindulman Church is the first in the Diocese of Talibon to be given a special bond of affinity with the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome as declared by Bishop Patrick Daniel Parcon on December 21, 2022.

Architecture

The portico that provides shade by the entrance contains the year church-building began (1881) and completed (1950). In between them is the Latin phrase, “Fidei Nostrae Victoria” (Faith of Our Victory). Pilasters are painted white and stand on brown plinths. On some of them, they culminate in finials.

The pediment aligns with the width of the church’s portico, is shaped into a half-circle, and is surmounted by a lighted cross. Made from three sections containing holy depictions, it contains the Marian symbol enclosed in a circle with the phrase, “Ad Jesum Per Mariam” (To Jesus Through Mary).

Celebration

The feast of Our Lady of Consolation is September 8.
