History
Christianization of the town of Jagna was pioneered by the Jesuits who arrived in 1596. On September 29, 1631, Jesuit priest Buenaventura de Corazon established its parish that was then known as San Miguel de Jagna. However when the Jesuit friars were expelled in 1768, the Augustinian Recollects took over.
The church was burned in 1808 and a new one was constructed by Fr. Felix Blas de las Mercedes in 1808, which was then taken up by Fr. Mariano Gutierrez and Fr. Ramon Macian de Santa Ana, who finished the construction works in 1868. Paintings that can be seen in its interiors were made by Raymundo Francia, an artist from Cebu.
The church survived both man-made and natural disasters. For instance, it was spared from the ravages of the Philippine-American War in 1901 when the town was razed by the advancing American colonizers. Extensive repairs were carried out in 1968 that transformed its exteriors.
On February 8, 1990, it sustained damages from an earthquake. And on October 15, 2013, it had minor damages from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
Heritage
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared Jagna Church as a house of worship of heritage and historic significance. A Level II historical marker was given on March 10, 2015.
Architecture
The semicircular pediment is what catches the eye upon looking at the church’s facade. Its outline is decorated with rhomboids and molding. At its enter is the niche of the patron with pilasters. Below it is an arch window flanked by rectilinear windows, a pattern that is also seen in the ground level with the arched door and the windows in each side.
Bell towers flank the facade though they are of dissimilar heights, the epistle tower is shorter than the other. They are housed in quadrangular bases and the upper levels are octagonal, pierced with arches, and capped with a dome.
Celebration
The feast of St. Michael the Archangel is celebrated every September 29, while the secular celebration is called Sinu-og Estokada Festival or Sinu-og Festival. Additionally, the feast of St. Roch falls on August 16.
