History
According to one account, its old name was Guta de Leche given by Dutch traders because of its milk-like stalagmites in Guta Port. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, it was known as Carahan from sea turtle that was abundant along the coast. It was formally called Caramoan in 1619.
The Christian missionary Fr. Francisco de la Cruz Y Oropesa reached the peninsula in the 17th century. He began organizing the settlement that was then called Baluarte. It was turned over to the secular clergy in 1696.
An early church was made of wood, bamboo, and nipa. The present day church is made of stones, clay, and adobe.
Architecture
The church has red masonry wall with its arch entrance flanked by pilasters and niches of holy figures. In its upper level are arch windows flanking the central niche of the patron. On the pediment is an oculus, and it rises to a singular belfry decorated with spires and balustrade.
Celebration
The feast of St. Michael the Archangel is May 8 and the town celebrates the Isla Carahan Festival.
