History

A chapel in Ocaña was erected in post-war period in honor of St. Francis Xavier and it was attended to by priests from the mother parish St. Catherine of Alexandria of Carcar . While the convent of the mother parish underwent repairs in 1955, Fr. Anastacio Silva stayed in Ocaña and chapel-goers benefited from regular masses he celebrated.

An effort to convert the chapel to a parish was led by Doroteo Cavan, Miguel Cavan, Cresencio Fantonial, Filoteo Fantonial, Atty. Benjamin Nacua, Benito Tagimacruz, and Leon Velez. They were responsible in the donation of the lot on which the chapel stood to the Archdiocese of Cebu.

Our Lady of Lourdes was installed as the new patroness around this time on the account of the devotion to the Blessed Virgin. A family member of one of the land-owners was also healed through Her intercession.

On August 25, 1962, the first mass of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish was celebrated by the first parish priest Fr. Pedro Baricuatro. Fr. Baricuatro took charge of church-building to accommodate the lay faithful who came from as far as the villages of Sibonga. The wooden altar which is installed in the church and remains in use to the present day was donated by the mother parish.

The church underwent several improvements through the years. Its reconstruction was carried out between 1991 and 1998 by Fr. Arturo Bornia and completed by Fr. Marcelino Agravante Jr. who served from 1998 to 2002.

Fr. Marlito Binondo undertook its expansion between 2014 and 2019 and that was finished within the term of Fr. Carlito T. Mier (2019 to 2021). When Fr. Fulton Varga became the parish priest starting on November 23, 2021, he added roofs lateral to the nave walls.

Architecture

A church tower stands in the epistle side of the facade, and at its uppermost level surmounted by finials is an image of St. Michael the Archangel. Finials also adorn the pediment, from four pilasters rising on the horizontal molding of the facade’s second tier which is sparse of architectural embellishments. Flanking the rectangular entrance are alcoves of holy figures. Niches are also found in the pediment.

The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes falls on February 11.
