History
The town of Carmen was called Bugho, and it became a town on June 16, 1851. Carmen Church used to be part of Danao and later Catmon. It was established as a parish on August 19, 1851. A Spanish-era church of coral stone was torn down in the 1960s and the present-day church was built in its stead.
Architecture
The church has four Corinthian columns on high plinths supporting the gable roof over the portico. The main entrance has two levels and a plain pediment. In the ground level, the puerto mayor is flanked by perforated wall that functions as a window. In the upper register are five arch stained glass windows, the inner three of which are flanked by pilasters. A pair of bell towers of compound pilasters flanks the entrance, and on top is a two-bodied belfry with each level pierced by open arches. Each is topped with a green dome.
Another notable feature is the massive dome above the crossing of the church. Decorative ridges run along its teal roof, cutting the dome into half-wedges and upon each of which are three ornamental small blind arched dormer windows in white coat. The dome’s apex rises into a cupola surrounded by ornamental small piers, and on top are finials and a tapering spire.
Celebration
Carmen Church is dedicated to the advocation of St. Augustine of Hippo whose feast is celebrated every August 28 in a festival called Sinulog Festival.
Services
The parish office is open from 8:00 in the morning until noon and from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon.
