History

A chapel under the patronage of St. Therese was built by Virgilio Gonzales and his spouse in Lahug in 1938. However, it was destroyed during the Second World War and remained in ruins.

Efforts to re-establish the chapel by resident Juan Alburo bore fruit on March 19, 1959 when a mass was heard for the first time in years. Reconstruction was carried out and completed two years later. On March 19, 1961, the reconstructed church was consecrated by Arhcbishop Julio Rosales.

On February 1, 1964, it was declared a parish with Fr. Armand Clement of the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society of Canada as first parish priest. Its administration was then turned over to the secular clergy. It later became an archdiocesan shrine of the patroness.

Architecture

An overhang covers a small portico in front of the recessed entrance. In the upper register are an arch window of glass panels, channel letter of the name of the church, the niche of St. Therese in the curvilinear pediment, and a lighted cross. Flanking it are twin quadrangular bell towers of arched glass window and the rest of the church walls on either side whose lower level has rectilinear windows and the upper story an arched window.

Celebration

The feast of St. Therese is held every October 1st.

Services

The parish is open 9:00 in the morning until noon and from 1:30 to 5:00 in the afternoon on weekdays. On weekends, it is open only in the morning.
