History
Archdiocesan Shrine of Santiago Apostol de Compostela was declared a parish on July 21, 1865, separating from its mother parish of Danao and installing Fr. Manuel Alonzo as the first parish priest.
Its stone church was completed in 1866.
The town itself was established in 1863 and named after a city in Spain traditionally thought to be where the grave of the St. James the Elder was located.
The parish was declared by Cardinal Ricardo Vidal as an archdiocesan shrine on July 24, 2007.
Architecture
The undecorated facade stands today as it has been since it was built in the 19th century.
The entrance is a porte-cochere with Tuscan pilasters and above are the words, “Sr. Santiago Apostol de Compostela, Año de 1866,” which roughly translates: St. James the Elder and Apostle, Year 1866.
The side aisles and the pediment of the church itself, recessed, make up the rest of the facade. The upper register of the wings slope up toward the pilasters that flank the entrance door. The said pilasters terminate in three-bodied pinnacles.
Perhaps the indelible character of the facade is the elaborated tapering, linear cornices on an otherwise unadorned pediment, which is pierced by a rose window. The puerta mayor is a massive arch door, and the wings flanking it have narrower arched entrances.
Celebration
The yearly celebration for the feast of St. James the Apostle is every July 25th called Queseo Festival.
