History

Jimalalud was a mission station of the Augustinian Recollects, who sent priests to administer to the churches in Negros island beginning in 1848. Along with another mission station in Ayungon, it was a visita of Tayasan Church when the latter became a parish by seceding from Tanjay in 1849.

In the next four years, Fr. Antonio Moreno, OAR, the parish priest of Tayasan, built the churches in Manjuyod, Ayungon, and Jimalalud as well as other edifices. Because the church and rectory of Tayasan were in disrepair, Fr. Cándido Díez requested to move the town and parish of Tayasan to Jimalalud in 1886. His request was granted on the condition that the structures in Tayasan would be preserved.

Finally, Jimamalud was declared an independent parish in 1889.

In 1891, church-building of a more durable house of worship in Jimalalud was initiated by Fr. Bernardino Ramirez, OAR, the parish priest of Tanjay. But such plan for a new church was interrupted by the Philippine Revolution in 1898 and by the circumstance that the Recollects left Negros.

The church was taken over by the Aglipayans between 1905 and 1910. After a Supreme Court decision in 1906, the Roman Catholic Church successfully regained Jimalalud and it was placed under the pastoral care of Tayasan and Cebu.

A church made of humble building materials was erected in 1930, but it was burned during the Second World War. The construction of a larger, permanent church was carried out but met with difficulties in subsequent decades. The present-day church was completed during the term of Fr. Victor Fontejon who served between 1978 to 1984.

Celebration

The feast of the Holy Child is January 15, coinciding the town’s Hambabalud Festival (Sinulog sa Jimalalud).
