History
The town was known by its old name Tolong. Augustinian friars were the first to reach its settlement, but they left the mission and were replaced by the secular clergy. It was placed under the parish of Tanjay.
The town acquired its current name by virtue of Executive Order No. 111 that was signed by President Manuel Roxas on December 17, 1947.
The Augustinian Recollects assumed the mission in Tolong. They built a church made of humble building materials and other structures in Daang Lungsod (Old Town). The pueblo was moved to a site nearer the coast in 1855, and the church as seen today was built in its present site. In 1856, the church became a parish.
Architecture
The church has a shell-like portico enclosing the overhang over the entrance to the interiors. The image of the patroness is installed by the overhang, and behind her is a window of glazed glass fashioned into geometric shapes. An narrow arc of glass can be spied high up on the pediment, which is surmounted by a cross. The bell tower of pierced wall built in the epistle side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria is April 25 in a celebration called Pakol Festival.
