History

The island of Sibale, as it was and still is known among the residents, was explored by Spanish colonizers Martin de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo in 1570. When it fell under colonial government, it was part of Banton and administered from Arevalo (Iloilo) along with the rest of Romblon.

It was renamed to Concepcion after its patroness, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.

There were many attempts to put up a settlement in the island, and each time it was destroyed by Moro raids. In 1834 and 1865, the colonial government made plans to settle the island but was met with the challenges of its small size, available fertile lands, and exposure to seaborne Moro-led attacks. Its people were tended to by the priests from the Romblon Parish (present-day Romblon Cathedral) and Banton Parish.

Sibale separated from Banton in 1903.

The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) assumed the spiritual administration of Sibale along with Caluya Islands in 1937. Since the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1898, Sibale had no Catholic priest and Aglipayanism was in sway. Nevertheless, people remarkably returned to the Catholic faith. A chapel existed according to a 1951 document.

Its church became a parish with Fr. Dennis Mckillip, SVD, as its first parish priest who served between June 1958 until May 1993. In 1959, its church was expanded and a convent was built.

Architecture

The topmost part of the left-side pillar serves as a simple belfry. The church’s facade has a pale-blue accent as seen in the pierced wall flanking its entrance (shaded by an overhang) and trims. Above the entrance are triangular apertures, an arrow-shaped, six-cornered concrete surface, and a hexagonal opening. A cross is erected in the right-hand side of the pediment.

Celebration

The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is December 8.
