History
It is said that the name of the town Buhi is derived from nakabuhi, which means one who escaped. The original settlers of the land were thought to be people who moved from the devastation caused by eruption of Mayon Volcano.
An early church was built by Fr. Simon de Salamanca in Buhi in 1680. Located near the lake, it remained standing until 1730 when it caught fire. A new church was constructed in 1735. Blessed by Fr. Jose de la Cerda in December 24 in the same year, it was made of sturdier building materials.
However, it was destroyed due to succession of tremors. Its stones from its ruins were made to build the new church, which was constructed between 1870 and 1884 during the incumbency of Fr. Angel Malumbre. Its roof, which sustained damages in 1884, were repaired between 1889 and 1890.
Architecture
The entrance has intricate frontispiece and archivolt, and it is flanked with niches of holy images. Above a rose window flanked with arch windows. The pediment contains blind round aperture and seal. The entire facade is ornamented with pilasters, cornice, and finials. In the gospel side of the church is the five-bodied, octagonal bell tower.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Francis of Assisi is May 25 and the town celebrates the Lauyay Festival.
