History

Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal established the Archdiocesan Shrine of Blessed Pedro Calungsod in honor of the first saint from the Visayas region, Pedro Calungsod.

Calungsod was a young missionary who accompanied Jesuit friar Fr. Diego Luiz de San Vitores in Guam to spread the message of Christianity. He was martyred in 1672, beatified on March 5, 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Vidal led the plan to erect the shrine in 2000 from which it was hoped the devotion to the saint would spread. Its cornerstone was laid a year later, on April 2, 2001. Located within the archbishop residence compound in Cebu City, its design was created by Prudence Salutillo and Fr. Ildebrando Jesus Aliño Leyson.

Construction was undertaken by Engr. Lerio Leyson of Soley Construction. It was opened to the public upon its consecration on December 11, 2002. Improvements of the structure were carried out by Fr. Leyson, Engr. Albert Lim, and Constantino Maderazo through the years.

Architecture

The shrine can hold anywhere between 150 and 200 churchgoers. A small staircase leads to the portico that is found in the entrance of the shrine. It features four Tuscan columns with three wide arches.

Above the facade are three reverse ogee arches, the central bearing the high relief of the patron saint that was created by Seferino Zafra. It is flanked by emblems on either sides, the coat of arms of Archdiocese of Cebu in one side and the coat of Arms of Archdiocese of Agana in the other.

The upper sweep of the facade and the curvilinear pediment blend into each other. On its apex is a cross and on either edges are finials.

Above the portico in its interiors is the choir-loft, and below it is a small space for the narthex. The lateral nave walls are punctured with open entryways and on clerestory are arch windows with a cross motif. Tuscan columns are found overlooking the sanctuary.

High above the nave walls are gilded inscription taken from the gozos of the saint that reads and translates to the following:

“Sulogoon sa katawhan ug sa Dios (Servant of the people and of God)
Pinasidunggang anak sa Kabisay-an (Honored son of the Visayas)
Nanghinaut kining tingog ug kining pinulongan (We raised our hopes in our voice and tongue)
Imong mahinumduman (That you remember us.)

Pedro Calungsod, ikaw karon gisangpit (Pedro Calungsod, we call upon you now)
Isip katagilungsod dinhi sa yuta (As fellow townfolk here on Earth)
Ug ingon man sa langit” (And in Heaven.)

The shrine does not contain relics of the saint for his body was thrown to the sea and not recovered. A reliquary is located below the altar in the form of a bronze box that contains earth samples of Tomhom, Guam and a cut from the cassock of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores.

A replica of the sword (cutlass) that was used to deliver the fatal blow that caused the death of Calungsod is enthroned at the rear portion of the reliquary.

In the gospel side of the sanctuary, one can find the official portrait of the saint used during his canonization that was painted by Rafael del Casal.

A statue of the saint within glass encasement is also installed within the shrine; at its foot is part of a rock taken from Tomhon, Guam.
