History
Prior to the Second World War, a chapel was built dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in a property belonging to Don Pablo Attillo whose family brought the devotion from Manila. Such devotion was transferred to a place of worship in a location that is presently known as the Don Bosco Youth Center. It was destroyed during the war and later rebuilt.
After the Atillo family donated a land for the establishment of a parish in the area to be administered by the Salesians of Don Bosco, a church made of wood was constructed in the present site. Its mother parish was San Nicolas Church (Cebu City) until the former was granted independence and bestowed parochial status on January 27, 1957 with Father Clifford, SDB installed as its first parish priest.
Additional lands were purchased over the years and plans for the building of the present-day church were proposed by Plutarco Diaz. Its cornerstone was laid in 1966, a redesign was drawn up by Virgilio Asuncion, and its construction was completed after 16 years.
The Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes became an archdiocesan shrine on February 11, 2007 in time for its 50th year founding anniversary. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes was granted episcopal coronation by the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Architecture
The nave wall is a continuous parabolic shell and defines the facade. A concrete overhang protrudes from the church wall that serves as roof of a portico. In front is a curved grotto where the statue of the patroness venerated by St. Bernadette Soubirous kneeling in the gospel side are found.
Its entrance is a massive doorway with metalwork, and above the overhang in the upper level is a stained glass window in the shape of a parabola. It is adorned with intersecting and circumscribing circles and linear ridges. The bell tower is built in the gospel flank. Similar to the one found in San Nicolas, it is made of three columns piercing through the sky. It is supported by transverse beams and interspersed with slanting bands.
Celebration
The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is held every February 11th.
