History
Talisay was an estate of Augustinian friars during Spanish colonial era. They founded its first parish, now called Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Teresa de Avila in Poblacion. After turning their ministry over to the Archdiocese of Cebu, they established the church in Mohon dedicated to the devotion of Sto. Niño in 1985 and installed Fr. Ambrosio J. Galindez, OSA as its first parish priest.
Architecture
One enters the church through a portico roofed by an overhang that is supported by a pair of engaged columns by the entrance. It opens up to the doorway that leads to the interior of the church. The entrance door is decorated with metalwork on top of which is a triangular window. It is flanked by rectangular windows with twin gable-like eaves, the walls at each side of the nave and the transepts are likewise designed by similar window openings. The pediment is spare, perhaps to better direct one’s gaze to the dramatic central section that extends atop the entrance door and awning. Its gable is elevated above the incline of the rim of the church’s roof and contains in bas relief a cross and a recessed niche containing a holy statue of Sto. Niño de Cebu.
Celebration
The feast day of Sto. Niño is held every second Sunday of February.
