History
Leganes was a visita of Oton when the latter was founded by Fr. Martin Rada in 1575. It was administered by Augustinians, Jesuits (1678), Dominicans (1760), and once again the Augustinians (1863).
The town and the parish of Leganes was organized in 1858. It was called Valencia upon the erection of its township, but it was soon changed into Leganes. The church was placed under the patronage of St. Vincent Ferrer.
The Augustinians were the administrators of the parish, with Fr. Mariano Sitchon considered to be the first parish priest.
An early church was built out of light building materials. This was replaced when the construction of a stone church made of tabique, brick, and bamboo was initiated by Fr. Andres Naves who served between 1869 and 1872, and it was completed during the time of Fr. Eladio Zamora who was assigned from 1886 to 1889.
In 1896, a typhoon caused damages in the church and convent. The diocesan clergy took over the administration of the church in 1898. After the war, an earthquake named called Lady Caycay struck Iloilo and destroyed the church on January 25, 1948. It was rebuilt subsequently, yet some remnants of the old church built during the Hispanic times remained such as the Doric column, lintel, and doorway.
It was elevated into an archdiocesan shrine by Archbishop Angel Lagdameo in April 2008. In September of the same year, the Museum of St. Vincent that contained rich heritage of the parish community and the life of the patron saint was unveiled.
Architecture
The neoclassical church employs grooved pilasters and engaged columns of composite capitals. Its portico, pediment, and the front wall is embellished with dentil, molding, arched fenestration, and festoon. The upper sweep of its facade is flanked by volutes that unfurl into acanthus leaves, decorated by arches and blind rose windows, installed with the image of the patron. Its pediment contains bas-relief and fixed with a budded cross.
The massive quadrangular bell tower is built separate to the church in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. Vincent Ferrer is April 14.
