History
The Jesuit missionaries from Carigara reached Baybay in 1620. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1768, the Augustinians assumed the role of administrators. It became a parish on September 8, 1835.
The town was established a year later. It is thought that its original site was in Punta or Kabkab of the village of Pangasugan. It was attacked by Moro raiders, the most vicious of which that saw great loss of lives and destruction occurred on October 22, 1605 and on November 4, 1663.
The present-day stone church was built by Mariano Vasnillio during the time of Fr. Vicente E. Coronado in 1852. In 1866, the town was engulfed in a huge fire that destroyed many structures, however the Holy Parish Church was miraculously saved.
Church-building was continued by Maestro Proceso who hailed from Manila and completed by sculptor-painter Mateo Espinosa in 1870.
Architecture
The church is built of cut coral stone, and there are contemporary concrete additions as seen from its portico and the trim around the arch apertures. The pediment is bare save for a blind rose window. The bell tower rises to four levels and it is capped with a dome.
Celebration
The feast day of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is December 8.
