History
Kananga was uninhabited in the past, and it was a stretch of land utilized as the route between Ormoc and Carigara. Formerly part of Ormoc, its population grew and roads linked the settlement with Tacloban City and Ormoc City. It attained municipal status by virtue of Republic Act No. 542 that was signed on June 17, 1950.
A petition to erect a church was made within the tenure of Bishop Lino Gonzaga. It was made into a mission station, installing Fr. Trifon Garduce as the first mission chaplain. It was canonically erected into a parish on June 9, 1959, with Fr. Manuel Colasito as the first head of the parish community.
Architecture
The church can be accessed through three entryways. Its facade is a fairly simple affair that is decorated by dentil, blind rose windows, and an arch stained glass with the image of the titular. The four-level bell tower is in the gospel side and built separately from the church, it is capped with a pyramidal roof.
Celebration
The feast day of the Holy Family is June 16.
