History
The name of the town, Murcia, was inspired by a city in Spain. The Augustinian Recollects evangelized in Murcia as early as 1856 through Fr. Juan Miro, OAR. It was in 1860 that the church was founded through the efforts of Fr. Juan Miguel Alvarez, OAR. It was matriz of the nearby churches including Granada, Alegria, and Kumaliskis.
Fr. Alvarez did not suffer the terrible fate that befell on other Spanish religious leaders during the Philippine Revolution in 1898. The Recollects however had to abandon their mission in Murcia and were able to resume after the revolution. Fr. Jacinto Alberdi initiated church-building work but it was disrupted by World War II.
In post-war period, the administration of the church was given to the diocesan clergy.
The arch found in the Spanish-era cemetery is one of the few colonial structures that remain standing presently.
Architecture
The church has a two-level portico. Its roof-line is adorned by dentil, and above the pediment is a belfry flanked by decorative chalice-like finials. The facade is pierced with arch windows.
Celebration
The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is held every December 8 and the celebration is called Tinabuay Festival.
