History

The church was erected by the Augustinian Recollects in 1860 (some accounts say 1898) and placed under the advocation of St. Vincent Ferrer. The present-day church was constructed in the 1930s.

According to oral tradition, the image of San Vicente Ferrer de Vito was caught as a piece of wood adrift in the sea by a fisherman. He had intended to use it as firewood, but after divine inspiration he carved an image of the patron. Many believed that it was miraculous and thus started a devotion particularly among those who are praying for healing.

One healing tradition is the palapak (from the root word lapak, meaning foot) where the image is raised to touch a devotee’s head and other parts of the body. Another is the Panaad kay San Vicente that began several decades ago and is observed during the days leading up to the yearly fiesta.

The local government considered the church as a “pilgrim site and one of the historical landmarks.”

Architecture

The church utilizes a palette of white, beige, and deep red. Its facade is embellished with bas-relief of cherubs and festoons, pilasters with Ionic capitals, and cartouche. It is pierced with windows with blind lunettes and hemmed by twin bell towers that are capped with onion dome.

Celebration

The feast day of St. Vincent Ferrer is May 2.
