History

In the past, the coastal town of Minglanilla was mostly populated by fisher-folks that it was known by another name, “Buat”, derived perhaps from the name of salted, dried fish. It was renamed to what it is known today by Augustianian friar Fr. Fernando Sanchez.

On October 30, 1857, the parish of Minglanilla was established. This Gothic church was built in 1880 until 1886. It was officially proclaimed an archdiocesan shrine by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal during the annual fiesta of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on August 23, 2007.

Architecture

Minglanilla Church contains several Gothic features. The portico is made of a vaulted ceiling supported by Ionic columns, two of which by the entrance are compound ones. The entrance door is an arch whose keystone bears a seal. It is flanked by an arched door, a rose window, a decorative band, and two pairs of pilasters which consist of a base, two central grooves demarcated by a gable and a flat section with rectangular motif. Pilasters define the facade’s two levels vertically, while horizontally by their gabled capitals, in harmony with and contributing to the sharp-angled overall characteristic of the church, and a horizontal relief that displays a triad of quatrefoil decors.

In the upper register above the doorway and aligning the columns below is a pediment whose apex contains a statue. Behind it, on the church wall, is a quatrefoil opening flanked by a pair of arch niches and rose windows. On either sides too are arch niches and rose windows. The outline of the pediment is embellished by elaborated cornices and pinnacles. Belfries flank and rise higher than the pediment. They are two-bodied with one level quadrangular, having similarly decorated pilasters on each edge, and interspersed with arches and balustrade on each side, their roofs taper to a pyramid.

The rest of the facade are extensions on both sides. They are made of two structures with gables. The one connected to the facade is higher than the other and has an arch with stained glass panes and its pediment pierced with a quatrefoil window. The other has an arch with tracery and on top is a quatrefoil opening.

Celebration

The church is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary whose feast day falls every 22nd of August. Sugat-Kabanhawan Festival celebrates the rendezvous of the Virgin Mother with the risen Christ, and it is held in the early hours of Easter Sunday morning every year.
