History

The town of Corella was called Nug-as, which was part of Baclayon. It seceded from the latter and became independent in 1884.

Baclayon parish priest Fr. Jose Maria Cabañas suggested to rename the settlement to Corella after his hometown in Navarra, Spain and where there was a fervent devotion to the patroness. There is no exact detail on when the patroness was installed. What is certain is the rapturous welcome that greeted the arrival of the image.

Augustinian Recollects were its first administrators. In the same year the town was organized, the church was erected by the first parish priest, Fr. Felix Guillen, under the instruction of Fr. Cabañas. Its construction was completed two years later during the time of Fr. Nemesio Llorente.

However, it had to be rebuilt due to its dilapidated state. The church as seen today was built in the first quarter of the 20th century. Fr. Pedro Montelbon carried out its construction in 1924.

The church, unfortunately, sustained damages during an earthquake in 2013. Religious authorities declared its full restoration in 2020.

Architecture

Doric columns dominate the facade of the church supporting the arcade of its portico before the main entrance. It also features neoclassical elements such as triglyphs, guttae, and metopes adorning the entablature. The image of the patroness stands high in the pediment, with her title forming an arc around her. The name of the town is spelt horizontally flanking the image.

Celebration

The feast of Our Lady of the Village is every April 27.

Services

The parish office is open from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon daily.
