History
Tubig, the old name of the town, was one of the first few settlements visited by Jesuit missionaries from Palapag in the 1600s. In 1601, they established a mission center in Tubig from which they spread towards other parts of the island of Samar, and in effect it was the matriz of churches of nearby towns.
It was renamed into Taft as evinced by Act No. 960 on October 23, 1903.
Architecture
A shallow arch creates a nice contrast to the white facade, and on it the name of the parish is spelt. An overhang is built over the entrance, and decorated with Graeco metope and triglyph. Flanking the main door way are twin pairs of columns. The four-post bell tower is found in the gospel side.
Celebration
The feast day of St. James the Great is July 25.
